This jackfruit burger is crowd-pleasing and down-right delicious! Packed with Mediterranean-inspired flavors and a fantastic meaty texture, it’s a recipe you love to make!
Young jackfruit is making its way to our grocery store shelves, and it is about time! In Asian countries, jackfruit is a common ingredient, often the feature in a bubbling pot of curry or simmered in a rich clove and spiced coconut gravy. Young jackfruit is the unripened flesh of a jackfruit plant. This fibrous fruit is ideal for swapping savory dishes as a mouth-watering meat alternative in any recipe.
I’ve spent much time in Indonesia, and I can confidently say they know how to make great jackfruit dishes. I learned from tasting a medley of dishes, and with each bite, my curiosity grew. I saw how versatile jackfruit was and how it absorbed and transformed with flavor. Every dish I tried was different, and they quickly became a staple in my kitchen.
The convenience of having canned jackfruit available at our local grocery stores ( if you have yet to see it, check it out!) has opened up a world of culinary possibilities. This jackfruit burger signifies a marriage of my love for jackfruit and Mediterranean flavors. It’s everything you want in a meal, flavorful, exciting textures, juicy, unique, yet comforting.

If you have yet to try jackfruit, I could not recommend it enough! Once you learn how to prepare it (keep reading!) It will be a total game changer in your kitchen and cooking.
De-Brining Your Jackfruit Burger Base
Possibly the most crucial step! Canned young green jackfruit is packed in brine. If not adequately prepared, the jackfruit takes on a pungent, sour taste that will cause your burgers to have a slightly “off” flavor. Thankfully, removing the sour taste is easy and only involves a few ingredients and 10 minutes!
Step By Step Guide On De-Brining Your Canned Jackfruit
Cooking Time 10 Minutes
- what you will need:
- 4 cups vegan “chicken” broth (like this)
- 1/2 onion
- 2 cloves garlic
- 1 can jackfruit, rinsed and drained
First, start by draining and rinsing your jackfruit with fresh water. Repeat a few times to rid as much of the sourness as possible. Then fill a pot with broth, onion, and garlic. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a simmer, and cook for 10 minutes.
Once your jackfruit has simmered for 10 minutes, drain and cool. It is ready for use in your Mediterranean jackfruit burgers or crab cakes!
You can do this step ahead of time and keep it in your fridge, stored in a lidded airtight container for a few days, or frozen for a few months!
This step will make all the difference in you loving your jackfruit burger or any other delicious recipe you choose to use, so do yourself a favor and don’t skip it!
